Re: Do supercars still interest you?

I've gone from having a Ferrari F50 poster in my kitchen (because my room was already full of others) when I was a child, to calling a Hyundai Xcent as my favorite in my late 20s. Maruti 800 is the 2nd best.

I used to think that you need money to buy something good looking and enjoyable. Thankfully, that is not the case. My parent's Maruti 800 gave me more smiles per penny and I used to come back home laughing when I had to replace a bumper in secret, and that taught me the most important lesson in enjoying the road - light on the wallet, light on the heart, moderate in power, and drama in every fart.

Even if I had the money, all I want is a Polo GT TSI or a well maintained City VTEC, a Jimny, and an Innova. I'll spend money on upgrades and buy the same model again if I have to.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

I voted Yes because I think Mustang is a Supercar with the 5 litre v8 engine - please correct me if I am wrong. I am definitely getting a Mustang as no other car excites me that much.

No, not anymore. As I grow older, the realisation that supercars are a fantasy and 'super' impractical, is becoming very apparent day by day.

The real development in my opinion is happening in the 20L-40L segment. Getting actual practical features (read safety, ventilated seats, and other creature comforts) in the more achievable segment for the common man is what I'm interested in. I test drove the new Harrier and Verna the other day after watching a few reviews, and boy did they impress!

The allure of the supercars worked like a charm on the young impressionable boy, who was fascinated by the top speed , has now grown up to realise 100-150 bhp is all you need for Indian road, with a lot of comfort for those long drives

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

Not the cars really. I am interested in the underlying technology which is often cutting edge.

Also, there is the not so small matter on the types of person that would own such a car. In many cases, not people you would want as your neighbour.

If you have kids or grandchildren and one of them likes cars, your interest in supercars is likely to get a boost. Our eldest son Luc, was very interested when he was between 5-12 years old. So we went to every exhibition and dealer, bought all the models for him. Best memories of supercars I have.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

When I was younger, yes. Nowadays, not so much. Despite whatever social media might tell you, the sad reality is that I'm never going to own or drive one of them and neither will 99% of the people on the planet.

I'm more interested in cars I can realistically buy and use daily.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

It's a mixed feelings for me. No matter what is happening in my life, if I see a supercar in person, I always drool irrespective of the brand, although I have a special soft corner for the prancing horse and the raging bull.

The thing that makes me sad about supercars these days is the dead sound they have in comparison to the roaring V12, V10 and V8. I mean they need to be driven to a certain speed to get a proper sound from what I observed. In Delhi only I got to see a GT2RS from a distance around 2 years back on my opposite side and it didn't even sound like anything in comparison to yesteryear supercars, where you could hear their sound from a long distance and the same experience I got from spotting a 296 GTB which was mute but on the empty stretch it sounded so good.

I do agree that exclusivity of a supercar is dead in terms of the launch of all the brands at the same time and no gap between the coupe and the convertible version release date and I kind of thing social media is the reason especially the content from Dubai, though it is a enjoyable experience to see supercars/hypercars in Dubai in person.

One more concerning thing I feel in the supercar community is the conduct of dealers for providing a limited edition car. I mean seeing uncountable videos where people have spoken about getting a Porsche GT Car for instance, it seems you need to buy their whole lineup and have special relations/backdoor politics which was never associated with the brand. I mean as an aspiring supercar owner, if I could afford one in this life, things like these make me really sad adding to the end of the glorious NA engine and forceful electrification of cars.

It's the engine that pulls the heart strings and till the time brands like Porsche make NA engines with a stick shift and V12 NA engines are around the interest will be alive.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

Voted No.

Those magical figures to 100 and 200 kmph etc are just numbers. Most supercars would be fun to drive even if they are 2 seconds slower than the best one.

What interests me more is a new Fortuner Launch or a LC250 which was recently launched or those old LC's which are still sold in some countries or a Swift with a 1.4 turbo engine or a Creta with an updated diesel engine or a gearbox.

Yeah, those old vintage 1990's and 2000's 991 and Skylines or a WRX STI still would make my head turn and want them but the newer super cars are just not my thing.

I know most things which happen in the 50 lakh to say 75 lakh range, above that, I practically don't even keep up.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

Though off topic, I would like to point out a particular phenomenon mentioned below -

"The mere-exposure effect is a psychological phenomenon by which people tend to develop liking or disliking for things merely because they are familiar with them. In social psychology, this effect is sometimes called the familiarity principle."

Why do we love to read more about Audi, BMW and Benz? Because they are too common on the road and they invoke desirability? Even the recent Creta which many termed as ugly, is being lapped up by buyers.
Similar was the case for First generation Swift, WagonR, etc.

No doubt NA Porsche's are legendary but the conduct of Porsche dealers at least Abroad going by dozen of youtube video's is quite questionable for a brand which is known for making drivers/enthusiast's cars.

Now sadly you have to buy a whole set of cars just to get an allocation for a Porsche GT car which is kind of killing the driving part of it and slowly becoming as an investment, where you could flip your car for double in the future.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

Voted Yes.

I think supercars still are holding on to their traditional design language. In fact, some legends have been brought back from dead and look great! But all this for ICE engines.

Once the EV craze completely kills the ICE, I won't bother at all.

Yes, if I can afford to park one on my driveway

Otherwise, it's okay to watch or read depending on the content.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

I voted no. I don't remember reading an article on supercars since I was a kid.

Years ago when I was playing need for speed, I read up on every car available in the game and some more. However, these days, I am only interested in cars that I can go out and buy for myself.

Yes, these machines are incredible, they push the limits of performance, but they don't pull at the heartstrings like they used to.

A couple of days ago I test drove a Honda City and got to see the ADAS feature in action. That really excited me more than any other car I can remember. Then I got to test drive the Skoda Slavia and it excited me too.

I do make it a point to read team bhp reviews on the cars that are launched, but most of the time, if the prices are way too high, I quickly lose interest. This happened for the Crysta, ZUV700, Safar, Harrier, etc.

I think this is what they call growing up, or getting practical.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

Voted Sometimes.

Knowing the issues with driving one and the impossibility of owning one has led me to not follow them at all but sometimes I do come across some video of a blistering lap of a V12/V10/straight6 of a McLaren/Ferrari/M3 the teenage emotions come rushing out

But that's about it since they find no place in my daily life.

Re: Do supercars still interest you?

Voted sometimes. I have never driven one except for a 2011 C63 AMG (which I have driven enough and I do not consider it as a super car).

Super/Hyper cars are built, sold and used for a specific purpose that can never be replaced. So YES super/hyper cars still definitely interests me. So then why only sometimes - it is because it depends on the specific model, brand and where I drive it.

For eg - on a twisty roads, autobahns, tracks, etc are home ground for super cars which I think nothing can replace the FUN factor for an enthusiast. The growling sound of a V8/V12/W12/W16 is a meditation for the mental wellness in its own way. As they say "the beauty lies in the beholders eyes", super cars still look hot and mesmerising.
